Elephant grass, once grown and dried, can be woven into a variety of shapes, whether these baskets or into our round woven placemats. The weaving techniques used to create our decor items are traditional, handed down through the generations and now in use by the team of weavers at Atampoka Crafts, a group of weavers from Bolgatanga and the surrounding local communities.
Together, Atampoka Crafts and Soloko have developed a range of hand woven baskets that not only look incredible, but they support the livelihoods of traditional artisans and crafters in the communities.
The process begins with growing and drying the elephant grass in great bundles, before the stalks are split - usually using the teeth - and twisted into workable fibres. Then, the stalks are dyed and dried again before being woven into the various shapes and designs of our hand woven baskets. The baskets are then quality checked and shipped around the world to homes and retailers.
