Hand-woven baskets based on traditional craftsmanship

For our beautiful hand-woven products made from elephant grass, we work very closely with Atampoka Crafts, a group of weavers from Bolgatanga and the surrounding local communities, made up of family and friends.

Weaving in the form of baskets, bags or other products is an important means of securing the livelihoods of these communities.

Basketry made by hand using traditional weaving techniques

We use Veta Vera or better known as Elephant grass for the production of our basket products. Veta Vera is a very robust and fibrous plant that gives the products a long durability. Making products from elephant grass is a complex process and requires a lot of experience and skill. Depending on the product, production can be very time consuming. It starts with the grass harvest. After harvesting, the grass has to dry for several weeks. The next step is to split the stalks, which is usually done with teeth. After splitting, the stalks are twisted together. Now the grass is prepared for dyeing, which later gives the product its beautiful and vibrant colours. And finally, the strawsare ready for weaving.
